The Philosophy

Our homes reflect many experienced stories. Personal treasures and associated memories are part of us. We surround ourselves with what we love, at home and when travelling the world. Since three years, Catharina Mende creates textile pieces made of exquisite materials – pieces you will no longer want to miss and that will become part of your own stories.

Catharina Mende‘s products become constant companions that you will naturally integrate into your everyday life. They allow a feeling of remaining in the moment, of being at home. This feeling can be summoned, irrespective of time or space, when we touch something, which immediately evokes a sense of wellbeing or resting within ourselves.

The Blankets are mood pieces for unflinching lovers of strong forms and colors while remaining unpretentious and luxurious. These pieces, with their striking graphic elements combined with lush, contrasting colors may challenge conventions, but never brash, they will insert themselves into the collage of your precious treasures in your home.

All products gain patina with time, whereby their beauty increases. Catharina Mende’s blankets offer room for dreams and yearnings, which guide us and into which we seek to immerse ourselves, again and again. At Home and Elsewhere.

About me

"A sense of yearning leads me as a constant and true companion, but it requires a special mood and something to touch.

My personal story is a collage of moments that have showed me the way to myself, again and again. I arrived at textile design through the free arts, classical design and my love for the constant changing of nature. Growing up in northern Germany, I was ingrained with the sheer endlessness of the skies. I studied in Florence, Essen and Berlin – very different places that are enlivened by the arts, design and pulsating forces, which continue to influence me to this day.

However, the place where I spent my childhood summers and where I continue to visit every year, remains the moment where I revisit all experiences. Somewhere in the low countries of South Carolina, where time is slower, where the summers are hot and muggy, where sea turtles lay hundreds of eggs in the dunes, where the creeks magically glitter under the clear sun, where the marshes’ sweetgrass whispers in the constant flow of the tides and the sound of the cicadas swells like a pulsating wall just to stop for the fraction of a moment, that is where the desire to create something to touch surfaced. A product that when taken in hand, allows me to return to the place of my yearnings - just for a moment – that puts everything in perspective and makes room for something new. A personal refuge."

The Materials

Extra fine merino // "Deep Splendor“ collection

All blankets and cushions in this collection are woven from extra fine merino. Naturally curled, merino wool allows for fabrication of voluminous and lightweight fabrics. These are wonderful to the touch and drape exceptionally well, thereby unfurling the blankets’ patterns. Due to merino’s elasticity, each piece will keep its form.

Yak and merino // "Light Companion“ collection

The travel blankets are woven from merino and yak. Yak wool is lighter and softer than sheep wool, making it ideal for fabrication of lightweight yet extremely warming blankets. Yaks live in the extreme cold and have thick coats consisting of several layers. Only the very fine, soft underhair is spun, similar to cashmere. These exceptional bovines from Central Asia fit perfectly to the travel blankets. Stoically and undeterred, they weather the cold and altitude, symbolizing freedom and independence as centuries old companions of the nomads.

Kid mohair, silk and merino // "Spotted & Beyond“ collection

The woven blankets are made of yarn spun from kid mohair and silk. These blankets are exceptionally soft and light with a natural sheen radiating from their magnificent colors. The knitted jacquard blankets, pillows and baby blankets are made of fine merino yarn spun with kid mohair, rendering each piece wonderfully comforting and soft. Both the kid mohair and merino wool originate from the South African Karoo.

The Production

Catharina Mende’s individual and singular products are made by exclusive manufactories in special places.

Italy, a place defined by the heat, the friendliness of its people and the arts; Scotland with its many, timeless traditions and humility towards the nature’s forces; South Africa, land of endless distances and luminous, contrasting color; and finally, Germany with traditional artisan trade and high quality standards – all of these places have inspired Catharina Mende and have helped her ideas to take form.

Catharina Mende also attaches great importance to the raw materials that are sourced or processed in these places. Each material requires correct handling, each fabric created with greatest care and love. Many years of experience and highest quality standards are of utmost importance. Catharina Mende’s manufacturers in Scotland, Italy, South Africa and Germany have, in some cases, several hundred years of experience, a trust in well-tried artisan trade and the aspiration to continually evolve their techniques. These manufactories are united by a sense of responsibility towards their employees as a promise for the future as well as an absolute claim to transparency and sustainability.
